The teaching of STEAM is very important, as our society is constantly changing and, as a school, we aspire to make an authentic contribution to the preparation of our students for occupations that may not have even been created yet. Our society expects our future generations of workers to possess knowledge and skills across all of these learning areas but also to have the capability to be creative problem solvers and innovative and critical thinkers who can also work cooperatively with others.   By teaching these skills and capabilities we are providing rich learning opportunities to begin the preparation of our students for their future career paths.

 Most students will work in tech-focused jobs, Good Careers Guide finds

A MAJORITY of students who started school last year will graduate to jobs that don’t currently exist, new research has revealed.

The Good Careers Guide has found 70 per cent of the students will work in tech-focused “jobs of the future” after 13 years of school.

It also found Australia’s five highest-growing jobs were traditionally people powered, but are quickly adopting robotics. The jobs include early childhood and special education teachers, speech professionals, social workers, audiologists and occupational therapists. Good Education Group’s Ross White said the growing jobs were closely linked to a growing population.

“At a glance, you wouldn’t associated these jobs with technology, particularly robotics, but that’s exactly what we’re seeing,” he said. “Robotics aren’t so much replacing jobs but enhancing jobs.”

Camberwell High School sent teams of students to compete in the Robot Tournament at National Manufacturing Week last week.

“We can’t future-proof,” teacher Matt Plummer said. “But we need to teach them critical and creative thinking, to research and problem solve.”
